How to tell you have an oblong face
Measure with your eyes, not a tape. If your face is noticeably taller than it is wide, your forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close to the same width, and your chin is more rounded than angular, you are in oblong (also called rectangular or "long") territory. The most common mix-up is with square — a square face has the same width top to bottom but is NOT noticeably taller than it is wide.
The one principle behind every cut below
Volume belongs at the sides, not on top. Every centimetre you add above the hairline adds to the length you are trying to break, so the cut should keep the top moderate and let the sides carry weight. Forward-styled fringes are the single most effective correction available to you: they shorten the visible face instantly.
Best cuts by length
- Short
- A French crop or a textured fringe cut: the hair is pushed forward over the forehead, which removes 2–3 cm of visible face length. Keep the sides at a mid fade at most — a skin fade strips away the width that balances the shape.
- Medium
- A side part with body left in the sides, or a textured quiff kept deliberately low. If you like a quiff, style it forward-and-up rather than straight up.
- Long
- Loose, slightly wavy hair to the ears or below adds width exactly where you need it. Avoid slicking it back — that is the one long style that lengthens the face.
What works against you
- High volume on top (pompadours, tall quiffs, spiky styles) — they extend the line you want to shorten.
- Very tight skin fades on both sides at once, which narrow the head and exaggerate the length.
- Hair slicked straight back off the forehead, which exposes the full height of the face.
- A long, narrow goatee: it pulls the chin downward. A fuller beard that adds width at the jaw does the opposite and works well.
Beard and finishing
A beard is a real tool on an oblong face. Keep it fuller at the cheeks and shorter under the chin and it broadens the lower half; the same beard grown long at the chin does the opposite.
